You Noticed The Grey Before Anyone Else Did.

Which is why it stings when a portrait comes back the right breed but the wrong dog.

"Read this BEFORE you order a pet portrait!"

Phoebe F.

Last Updated 31st August, 2026

It doesn’t happen all at once.

The ball comes back a little slower. The zoomies don’t last quite as long. A few grey hairs appear around their muzzle, one at a time, until one day you realise you can’t remember when they weren’t there.

Then you’re scrolling through your camera roll looking for something else, and you stop on a photo from last year.

Same dog. But not quite.

The darker muzzle. The sharper face. The way they stood.

And you think:

They’re getting older.

Nothing is wrong. They’re probably asleep on the sofa they’re technically not allowed on.

But from then on, you notice the little things more.

You take a few more photos a week. Let the walk last a little longer and record another video of them doing absolutely nothing.

Because the ordinary moments start to feel even more special.

If you’ve caught yourself doing that lately, this is for you.

👉 Try a portrait that's done right

You know that face better than you know your own.

Here's something that sounds obvious until you sit with it.

You have spent hundreds of hours looking at this animal. Not glancing, looking. You know the eyes. You know the exact expression that means dinner time? and the almost identical one that means walk.

You know which ear sits properly and which one has never once behaved. You know the marking under the chin, the scar on the leg, the way they sit with one back foot slightly out.

Nobody else knows any of that. Your neighbour sees a black Labrador. Your postman sees a spaniel. You see a specific individual with a name and a personality and an entire history.

This isn't sentiment, either. It's the norm.

Dogs Trust's 2025 survey of more than 342,000 people found 94% of dog owners regard their dog as family, and 80% describe them as their best friend. Most of the country is walking around with exactly this relationship and no particularly good way of saying so out loud.

Which is why the next bit is a bit strange.

👉 Try a portrait that looks like them

You have four thousand photos and none of them are on the wall.

Go and check.

Most people have somewhere between two and eight thousand pictures of their pet on their phone.

And here's the odd part: having thousands of them makes each individual one matter less. They're not really photographs at that point.

They're a stream. You scroll past forty of them looking for the one you actually wanted. The good ones get buried under three months of screenshots, receipts and pictures of a parking bay number.

There's a version of this that people only tend to notice afterwards. Owners who've lost a pet talk about it a lot online.

One line comes up more than any other: the regret isn't that they didn't take enough photos.

It's that they never printed any.

One owner, after a storage failure wiped their pictures, put it plainly. Their biggest regret was not printing at least one copy.

That's the real gap. Not memory. Not sentiment. Just the fact that a phone is a filing cabinet, and a filing cabinet is not a place you look at somebody you love.

Which is roughly the point where most people start looking at pet portraits.

👉 Try a portrait that's done right

And then you hit the thing nobody warns you about.

You search "custom pet portrait".

There are hundreds of options. Etsy, specialist companies, AI generators that'll do it in 10 seconds for a fiver, actual painters charging four hundred quid, and a long list of things somewhere in between.

You look at the example galleries, and honestly? Most of them look lovely.

So you'd assume the risk here is ending up with something badly drawn. It isn't. Read enough reviews of pet portraits, including the bad ones and you notice the complaints almost never say this is bad art.

They say something much more specific and much more upsetting than that:

It doesn't look like my dog.

The proportions are slightly off. The colouring is close but not right. The expression belongs to some other Pointer.

The artwork is genuinely competent. It's just not them.

And because the whole point of the thing was that it was them, competent doesn't rescue it.

This is the trap in the category, and it catches people who did nothing wrong.

Anyone can draw a Labrador. There's a shape to it. Floppy ears, blocky head, that expression. A skilled artist can produce a beautiful Labrador all day long.

Drawing your Labrador is a completely different job.

👉 Give 1 photo a place on the wall

What "looks like them" actually means.

The useful thing is that it isn't mystical. When you go through what owners actually praise and actually complain about, recognition comes down to a fairly short list of identity cues:

  • The eyes and the gaze. More than anything else. Get the eyes wrong and nothing else saves it. Get them right and people forgive a lot.

  • The expression. Not a neutral face. Their face. The specific one you'd recognise in silhouette.

  • Markings and colouring. The large white patch. The unique arrangement of small tan patches.

  • Ears and face shape. The ear that folds. The curves you love.

  • The quirks. The grey muzzle. The eyebrow marking. The scar. The tongue that doesn't fit in their mouth.

A dog owner online summed up the standard better than any brochure has managed: it's not just a picture of a dog, it's a picture of MY dog.

And here's why this matters more for you than for almost anyone else buying a portrait.

You're not commissioning a picture of a young dog in the abstract. You want them as they are now. Grey muzzle included, slightly softer around the face, the exact version currently asleep on the sofa.

Those are the details a generic approach smooths away first, because they read as imperfections to anyone who doesn't know the animal.

To you, they're the whole point. They're the bit that makes it this year's dog and not just a dog.

So the question stops being who makes nice art and becomes something much more practical.

👉 Try the difference for yourself

How would you even know before it's too late to change it?

Every portfolio online looks good. Of course it does. Nobody puts the disappointing ones in the gallery.

So a gallery tells you the artist can draw. It tells you nothing about whether they can draw your dog, because they've never met your dog, and the only person who can judge that is you.

Which exposes the actual problem with how most of this category works. The standard sequence is:

Pay → wait → receive → hope.

You hand over £50. You wait a fortnight. A parcel arrives. And that is the moment you find out whether it worked. After the money's gone, after it's been printed, after it's been framed, and after the point where saying "the eyes aren't right" feels like making a fuss.

For an ordinary purchase that's fine. For this one it's backwards. You're being asked to commit before the only question that matters has been answered.

And it's worth being honest about what the downside actually is here, because it isn't the money.

Losing £50 is annoying. Having something that mattered handled carelessly is a different feeling entirely.

You're left with a nicely printed picture of a dog that isn't quite yours, and no comfortable way to complain about it.

👉 Try the difference for yourself

The one thing worth checking before you order.

If you take nothing else from this, take this.

Before you order a pet portrait from anyone, find out when you get to see it.

Not the gallery. Not the reviews. Yours. The actual artwork of your actual animal, in front of your eyes, while it can still be changed.

That single question reorganises everything.

It converts a commission, which is inherently a gamble. Into a normal, controlled purchase where you know what you're getting before it becomes permanent.

Proof, revision, approval, then printing. In that order.

It's worth knowing that the better companies in this category do work this way.

Preview and revisions aren't rare. Several UK sellers offer some version of it, and it's fast becoming what customers expect. So this isn't a secret.

It's just the thing most people don't think to check until they've already paid.

What does vary is how seriously a company treats the likeness itself.

Whether the preview is a formality on the way to printing, or the actual point of the process.

👉 Start with the photo you love

House of Sully builds the whole thing around that one question...

Which brings us to why we wrote this.

House of Sully is a UK pet portrait studio, and the reason our process looks the way it does is that we think likeness is the only thing that really matters.

Everything else, the paper, the frame and the styles is important but downstream of whether you look at it and think that's him.

So it runs like this:

1. You send the photo that feels most like them.

Not the technically best photo. The one where they're doing the face. If you're not sure, send two or three and we'll tell you which will work before you order anything.

Charlie's on WhatsApp for exactly this.

2. A real artist illustrates it.

A person, working from your photograph, looking for the specific things: the eyes, the ear, the marking, the grey coming through.

Not a filter, not a one-click generator. The reason that matters isn't purity about art.

It's that a human being can notice that your dog's left ear folds, and act on it when you point it out.

3. You see the finished artwork before anything is printed.

This is the part that changes the purchase. You get the full piece, on screen, and you get to ask the only question you actually care about: does that look like him?

4. You tell us anything that's off, and we change it.

The eyes. The colouring. The muzzle looking too dark or not grey enough. As many times as it takes, at no extra cost. And you don't need to feel awkward about it.

You're not being difficult, you're doing the job only you can do. The artist knows illustration. You're the one who knows the dog.

5. Nothing goes to print until you say yes.

Not "we'll take that as approved." An actual yes, from you.

6. And if it still isn't right, you get your money back.

The point of the four steps above is that you shouldn't need it.

The artist knows how to draw. You know what they look like. The process exists because both of those are facts.

👉 Try a portrait that's done right
A digital mockup showing two versions of a custom pet portrait design for a greyhound dog named 'Sully'. The top version shows the design with blue and white stripes, and the bottom version shows it with pink and orange stripes.

Why people do this while the dog is around?

There's a reason we've written this for people with older pets specifically, and it isn't the one you might expect.

We're not going to tell you time is running out. You know your own dog and you don't need a company making you feel bad about it.

The actual reason is simpler and quite a lot nicer. A portrait of an animal who's currently alive is different from a portrait of one who isn't.

It gets made while you can still look over at them. You get years of walking past it while they're still around.

And the version of them it holds is this one. This year, this face, the grey exactly as it is now.

Rather than a version reconstructed later from whatever photos happened to survive.

That's the whole argument, really. Do it now and it's a celebration. It just happens to also be the thing you'll be most glad you have.

The grey muzzle. The wonky ear. The look they've been giving you for eleven years.

Capture them exactly as you see them today.

👉 Try a portrait that looks like them

See how yours would look.

Here's the part worth being clear about, because it changes what you're actually deciding right now.

Ordering isn't the moment you commit.

Ordering is the moment an artist starts work.

Nothing is printed until you've said yes.

And if we still haven't got them right, you get your money back.

So the risk you're weighing isn't really what if it doesn't look like him.

That's the one thing you've been handed control of.

Not sure which photo to use? Checkout adding two or three and we'll tell you which will work best.

Customer photo review of Stripy | Custom Pet Portrait

I got 2 prints. They couldn’t have been more helpful when I was super disappointed from the first photo I uploaded. I managed to get 2 great photos. My only gripe (and the reason for 4 stars) is that I had said over and over that my prints were going to be next to each other and so I wanted them to fit perfectly, had asked for my horses head to be made bigger which they said they had done but they hadn’t. My dog’s head is ginormous next to my horses and it looks a little silly but I will get used to it. Overall though I love the prints and am happy with how they deal with their company. Really recommend.
